Vintage clothing has already lived thirty to fifty years. Caring for it well keeps it wearable for decades more.
Denim (jeans, jackets, skirts, shorts):
Turn inside out. Wash in cold water on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent. Never wash hot. Air dry flat or hang in the shade. Skip the dryer completely. The heat is what shrinks, fades, and weakens vintage denim.
Natural fiber tops (cotton shirts, flannels, sweaters):
Wash cold, inside out, on a gentle cycle. Air dry. For wool, hand wash in cold water with a wool-specific detergent and lay flat to dry. Never hang wet wool.
Leather (bags, belts, boots):
Wipe with a damp cloth. Condition occasionally with a leather-safe product to prevent drying and cracking. Keep out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources. Store in a cool, dry place.
General rules for vintage:
- Wash less. Spot clean when you can.
- Cold water only. Always.
- Air dry always. The dryer is where vintage goes to die.
- Store folded or hung, out of direct sunlight.
If a piece has already made it this far, it's resilient. Treat it gently and it'll keep looking better with age.
